Solar Eclipse, Jan 15, 2010

In Feng Shui and Indian astrology, eclipses are seldom viewed in positive light. It is perceived that they bring negative events or bad luck. We just had a solar eclipse this afternoon with a duration of a good 11 mins and 8 secs.

Wikipedia has the details:

The solar eclipse of January 15, 2010 is an annular eclipse of the Sun with a magnitude of 0.9190. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring Earth's view of the Sun. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is smaller than the Sun, causing the sun to look like an annulus (ring), blocking most of the Sun's light. An annular eclipse will appear as partial eclipse over a region thousands of kilometres wide.

This is the longest annular solar eclipse of the millennium,[1] and the longest until December 23, 3043, with a maximum length of 11 mins and 7.8 seconds. (The solar eclipse of January 4, 1992 was longer, at 11 minutes, 41 seconds, occuring in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.)[2]

It is visible as a partial eclipse in much of Africa, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Asia. It is seen as annular within a narrow stretch of 300 km (190 mi) width across Central Africa, Maldives, South Kerala (India), South Tamil Nadu (India), North Sri Lanka, parts of Burma and parts of China.

The eclipse starts at the Central African Republic, traverses Camaroon, Congo and Uganda, passes through Nairobi, Kenya, and enters the Indian Ocean and reaches greatest eclipse.

After that it enters Maldives, where it would be the longest on land with 10.8 minutes of viewing. This makes the tiny islands of Maldives the best spot for viewing this eclipse from land. The annular Eclipse at Male', the capital city of Maldives starts at 12:20:20 hrs and ends 12:30:06 hrs Maldives local time (UTC+5). This is also the longest duration of any city having an international airport in the eclipse track.[3]

At approx 13:20 IST, the annular solar eclipse enters India at Thiruvananthapuram(Trivandrum), Kerala and exits India at Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. The eclipse is viewable for 10.4 minutes in India. After Rameswaram, enters Sri Lanka at Delft Island, exits at Jaffna in Sri Lanka, cross Bay of Bengal and again enters India in Mizorum and then ends in Burma - China border.

For best viewing of the eclipse, you need to travel to Maldives, where many International flights land and take off everyday, being a world famous tourist destination. Visa for Maldives is free for 30 days for a tourist entry.

  5. Thanks, shall not be beating the drums or shouting to the sky 'begging sky dog not to eat the moon' like we used to do in our younger days. Oh those were the days how naive & innocent.:)

  7. Hi there, Web Development Company. I'm sure watching it is quite an experience. Thanks for stopping by.

Tekkaus, yeah, lots of people are not into it too but interested or not, it'll still happen and the effects will still be there whether we like it or not.

  9. Will blog about Lillian Too and Joey Yap's talks - I attended both this year! Am I crazy or what! Haha!

Lillian Too has some surprising revelations this year - something about a leader's life being threatened. Will reveal that on my blog soon.

And Joey Yap gave some of the most important dates and times that you can use to activate for a better year - will also reveal this soon : )

  10. Thank you, Foong. So cool! I was afraid to ask if you could blog about them. Thanks again. I appreciate your sharing.

Yeah, I read about the leader and probably an election. Not too disruptive, I hope.

Looking forward to Joey's dates and times - at least good to know.
